The Truth About Nervous System Regulation

Why lasting change requires working with the subconscious mind and why nervous system regulation alone isn’t enough.

Have you noticed how often “nervous system regulation” is being talked about lately?

It’s an important topic. And at the same time, I see a growing problem with how it’s being presented—as if it’s the answer to everything, or something entirely new that we’ve only just discovered.

When I began coaching over 20 years ago, we talked about stress management. Then the language shifted to self-love. Later, it became about calming the sympathetic nervous system. Today, the phrase is nervous system regulation.

The language has changed, but the work has not. Nervous system regulation isn’t new, and it isn’t a shortcut.

Each shift in terminology subtly creates the impression that we’re dealing with a new problem, or that there’s a new solution we must now figure out. That simply isn’t true. The same challenges people faced learning how to manage stress, love themselves, or calm their nervous system are the same challenges present today.

What often gets lost is the “how.”

Hence, changing language doesn’t magically change the process. And if someone never truly learned how in the first place, a new term won’t suddenly make it easier.

So let’s set the labels aside and talk about what actually supports regulation.

Most people are familiar with the first level of care: deep breathing, somatic movements, yoga, sound, essential oils, walking in nature and massage. These absolutely help. They calm the nervous system and are an important foundation.

But they are not enough on their own.

To truly regulate the nervous system, or manage stress in a lasting way, you have to go deeper, to the level of the subconscious mind. This is what people often mean when they say they want to tap into the subconscious mind—not as a concept, but as a lived, ongoing practice. This is where the beliefs, emotional patterns, and internal narratives live. These are the things that trigger the nervous system in the first place.

If that layer isn’t addressed, regulation practices become a band-aid. Helpful, yes, but temporary.

Here’s the caveat that often sends people searching for new explanations: subconscious work is not quick, and it’s not one-and-done. It’s ongoing. And we live in a culture that values fast, easy, and immediate results.

So marketing sells a comforting story: fix your life in three simple steps.

What it doesn’t tell you is that those steps need to be practiced over and over again, sometimes thousands of times, until new patterns are built. While the methods may be refined, the core principles are centuries old. This isn’t new wisdom. It’s enduring wisdom.

One of the most common questions I hear from clients is, “But how do I actually do that?”

The answer is usually straightforward, and that’s where the resistance begins.

Both nervous system regulation and subconscious work require time and pause. And paradoxically, the more dysregulated someone is, the less likely they are to slow down.

Imagine running your phone battery to empty and then refusing to plug it in. That’s often what we expect of ourselves.

A significant amount of overwhelm, anxiety, emotional reactivity, and triggering would ease simply by pausing. Add in journaling that explores emotional experience, along with practices that gently engage the subconscious, and you begin to recharge the system.

This isn’t elimination, it’s remediation. And people don’t like that.

We’ve been sold an image of success that suggests we should never feel triggered, never experience uncomfortable emotions, and never make mistakes. That standard isn’t growth; it’s a setup for failure.

Real success doesn’t happen through an elevator. It happens through steps. When we hear other people’s success stories, it often sounds fast and effortless, but that’s rarely the full truth.

If you’ve made it this far, here’s the message I hope you take with you:

truth about nervous system regulation

Nervous system regulation isn’t about never being dysregulated.
It’s about learning how to notice sooner, pause more often, and return to yourself with greater ease.
It’s not a destination, it’s a relationship. One built through practice, patience, and self-honesty over time.
